Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of Scottish defender Gary Caldwell from Celtic on a four and a half year contract. The Latics have reportedly paid around £1m to the Hoops for Caldwell, whose contract at Parkhead was due to expire at the end of this season.
Caldwell was originally supposed to join Celtic team mates Barry Robson, Chris Killen and Willo Flood at Middlesbrough and had even undergone a medical with the Teessiders. However he changed his mind at the last moment and opted to join Wigan, where he will reportedly earn around £20,000 a week. Caldwell had been holding out for a similar sum from Celtic, but the Hoops had refused to grant him a new deal, leading to a prolonged impasse between player and club.
Caldwell played his last league game for Celtic against Old Firm rivals Rangers in the first week of January.
