According to multiple sources, Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia has chosen Chelsea over Liverpool as his next club and is expected to join the Blues in the coming days.
The race between Chelsea and Liverpool for Lavia has been closely linked with the one for Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian eventually joined Chelsea in a £115 million deal and dealt the first heavy blow for Liverpool, and Lavia has now added insult to injury for the Merseysiders by making the same decision.
Both Premier League giants had offers for Lavia accepted by Southampton, and Liverpool’s was reportedly higher in the end. But though the 19-year-old was initially believed to be favouring a move to Anfield, he has obviously changed his mind and will be going to Stamford Bridge instead.
Liverpool managed to leave Chelsea’s stadium undefeated in their season opener on Sunday, but these transfer setbacks have surely put them in a desperate situation regarding their plans for a midfield reconstruction.
