Inter earned themselves a win, but it was too little, too late as rival club Milan claimed the last Europa League spot with a win over Bologna. Here are five things we learned from the encounter.
5. A Bit Too Late
Inter may have defeated Lazio twice this campaign, but they will end up losing out on a European spot. They were unable to get the results they needed, and their big signings failed to perform when they needed them to. Inter have to look back on this season with disappointment as they were eliminated by Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League and failed to qualify for Europe, watching city rivals, AC Milan claim the final spot.
4. Red Cards Are Bad
It was a pretty bad match for Lazio, who had to play with nine men after Lulic was sent off in the 78th minute. Those two red cards certainly didn’t help their situation, but they didn’t need the result as they have already qualified directly for the Europa League, and they have to be somewhat content with how the season went, although they will certainly be looking to qualify for the Champions League next year.
3. Disappointment Once Again
Inter fans must be devastated by how the season has gone, especially knowing that they had the opportunity to qualify for Europe had they not suffered some major losses including ones against Sassuolo, Crotone, and Sampdoria. In the end, it was a lack of composure that cost them that sixth place finish, and they’ll have to sit and watch as Milan celebrate at the San Siro. (Good thing I’m a Milan fan.)
2. Money Isn’t Everything
Money isn’t the end all, be all of sports, and Suning have to understand that. After dumping over €100 million into new signings such as Gabigol, Joao Mario, and Gagliardini — all of which failed to deliver on their huge fees — they ended up worse than the previous season. Inter cannot simply rebuild their team year after year. There is something wrong internally and no amount of money or star player can fix that. They need to grow slowly and make good signings, not big name talents who have yet to prove themselves in world football.
1. Keita Continues to Perform
Keita scored another goal this time, and he continues to impress, attracting more and more attention with every goal he scores. Many clubs are rumored to be interested in the forward, who is almost certainly leaving Lazio, including Milan and Juventus, two competitors who Lazio surely don’t want to give the Senegalese attacker to either of them. However, it’s looking more and more likely that he will end up at another Serie A side, most likely AC Milan, who if rumors are proving true, are amassing quite a side under the new leadership of the Chinese.
