Lazio and Roma want Matip

Lazio and AS Roma are both interested in signing Joel Matip on a free transfer when his contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The 32-year-old Cameroonian centre-back, known for his tendency to carry the ball far up the pitch from time to time, has been a part of an extremely successful squad at Liverpool since his arrival from Schalke 04 in 2016. Since then, he has made a total of 201 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 11 goals and helping the team win the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup twice, and the Community Shield.

However, Matip’s time at Anfield has been riddled with injury absences. Even now, he remains out of action through an ACL tear he suffered in early December. It remains to be seen if Liverpool, as departing manager Jurgen Klopp hinted when he confirmed Matip’s injury in December, decide to offer the defender a new deal. The two teams from the Italian capital will certainly be watching the situation closely.
