(GSM) – High-flying Lazio are interested in luring Zenit St. Petersburg defender to the club, according to a report in Il Corriere dello Sport.
Despite just winning the Russian Premier League with his club, the Portugal international is reportedly unsettled in Russia after warming the benches for most of the season.
With his contract set to expire in December 2011, Zenit are said to be prepared to let him leave for a relatively-small fee to avoid the risk of losing him for free in six months’ time.
Lazio, who currently sit in second in the Serie A, were interested in the former Stuttgart defender in the summer but were put-off by Zenit’s high demands.
The Italian club’s manager Edy Reja is believed to be looking to improve the quality of his defenders and Meira, who has 54 caps for Portugal and Champions League experience, apparently fits the bill.
Juventus were also interested in the 32-year-old in the summer and could be willing to scupper Lazio’s move for the defender.
