talkSPORT has learned that Lazio are set to challenge Newcastle for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
The Magpies were on the verge of signing the France international this summer, but the deal eventually fell through over player’s personal terms.
And while Newcastle remain keen on the powerful forward, Serie A giants Lazio are also showing interest.
The Biancocelesti are slowly coming to terms with losing Miroslav Klose and they hope to replace the German striker with Bafetimbi Gomis.
The Frenchman, who has a contract until June 2013 at Stade Gerland, is highly unlikely to sign a contract extension, meaning he should be available on a cut-price deal in January.
Bafetimbi Gomis has become famous for scoring at least ten league goals in every one of last seven seasons.
His current side have been pretty disappointing this term, but they are 11/10 to see off Bordeaux at the weekend and thus make amends for the 5-1 defeat to Montpellier.
