Cardiff City needed extra time to defeat League Two outfit Oxford United 3-1 in round one of the League Cup on Wednesday.
Malky Mackay’s side were made to work for their victory at The Kassam Stadium in the only match of the competition on Wednesday, after the clash between Bristol Rovers and Watford was postponed due to the ongoing riots in England.
Scottish midfielder Craig Conway gave the Championship side the perfect start with a goal after 12 minutes.
But Oxford, who have recruited impressively in the off-season, would not lie down.
Simon Clist got the equaliser after half an hour and they managed to hold on for the remainder of normal time to take the game to an additional 30 minutes.
Substitute Peter Whittingham snared the all-important second goal after 98 minutes, driving his low shot past Ryan Clarke in the United goal.
With Oxford chasing a late equaliser, they were finished off by Nathaniel Jarvis who netted in the dying stages, ensuring Cardiff celebrated their second away win in just four days.
