(GSM) – Lega Calcio President Maurizio Beretta has called on FIFA to implement technology in order to prevent referee gaffe’s which have costed some participating teams a place in the World Cup.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter had personally apologised to England and Mexico following huge refereeing blunders contributing to their World Cup exits.
But the world’s football governing body still rejects calls for use of any kind of technology in the game.
“The Lega Calcio has always supported technology that would reduce the risk of errors and help everyone, starting from the referees, to make the right decisions,” Beretta told La Repubblica.
“The more we reduce the risk of a mistake, the better it will be for everybody concerned, especially when so much is at stake in a major tournament.”
The Lega Calcio has been at the forefront of testing new technology and experimented with goal-line cameras during Coppa Italia matches.
“Each individual technique has to be evaluated, but we are talking about a very important aspect of the sport that has economic factors too.
“Today there is huge investment and so to make the present and the future more stable, we need an updated system to ensure we do everything possible to reduce errors to a minimum.
“The decisions of the referee influence football in such an important way that it cannot be ignored and the sport in turn has economic repercussions.”
