The Premier League season continued this week with the first set of midweek fixtures as we push through a busy schedule between now and the World Cup this winter. The majority of clubs played on Tuesday and Wednesday but last night, we saw Leicester City play host to Manchester United at the King Power Stadium.

In what won’t exactly go down as a classic in the history of the top flight, United were the ones who were able to edge out a 1-0 win. Today, we’re going to pick out a few takeaways from the Thursday encounter.

Sancho’s revival?

Jadon Sancho still has a long way to go before he can start to justify the price that was paid for him by Manchester United but so far this season, Erik ten Hag appears to be pulling a few more confident strokes out of him. He’s more composed on the ball, isn’t afraid to get creative, and based on the fact he’s scored in two of his last three we’d say his finishing is beginning to come in handy for the Red Devils.

Leicester in disarray

Leicester City have just one point from their opening five games of the PL campaign and that alone speaks volumes to how low their confidence is, with their only win being a penalty shootout success over Stockport County in the cup. Brendan Rodgers spoke after the match about how the lack of investment has really hurt them, but you also need to couple that together with taking some ownership for tactical shortcomings.

Work to be done

Manchester United have won three games in a row against Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester. That list, on its own, seems pretty impressive, but you could also make the argument that none of those teams were at their best – with the Saints arguably deserving more than what they got. It’s a great stepping stone and being back in the top five is important, but this journey is far from over.
