Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott insists nothing but the Premier League title will do in his side’s quest for the crown.
Following City’s impressive start to the season, Lescott said matching cross-town rivals Manchester United is now the club’s target to ensure the trophy heads to the Etihad.
Roberto Mancini’s side are top at Christmas for the first time since 1929 and have lost just one game in the Premier League in a dominant opening few months of the season.
However, Manchester United are just two points adrift, and Lescott said keeping ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is key to their chances.
“The main goal is to win every game, home and away, and match United’s results,” Lescott said.
“We are scoring a lot of goals and winning games and we have an air of confidence about us. But that is controlled – you don’t want it to be too arrogant.”
“The main thing is to keep it going, keep progressing and keep our feet on the ground.”
Last season’s third-place finish saw City concede the fewest goals across the league but a lack of goals occasionally hindered their chances of sustaining a challenge for the Premier League trophy
“Last season we got a lot of negative publicity because the goals weren’t flowing freely,” Lescott added.
“We were hard to break down but not scoring so many goals. This season we have a better balance.”
“We have had the belief and confidence to score more goals and the strength and organisation to keep clean sheets.”
Manager Roberto Mancini has echoed Lescott’s thoughts, stating the need to acquire 90 points this year if the club are to secure the title.
