Deportivo Tachira, Defensor and Boyacá Chico opened the 2009 Copa Libertadores with victories over Guarani, America de Cali and Aurora respectively.

The very first goal of the group stage was scored by Pedro Chavez after 38 minutes in the match between Guarani Asuncion and Deportivo Tachira, to give the Paraguayan home side a 1-0 lead.

However, Gerson Chacon equalised four minutes before the break and Edgar Perez netted the winner for the Venezuelans with 11 minutes to play.

Uruguayan side Defensor Sporting needed only one goal to beat Colombian champions America de Cali. Pablo Gaglianone scored what turned out to be the decider on 37 minutes.

Another Colombian side, Boyaca Chico, were much too strong for Aurora Cochabamba in Bolivia. Antonhy Tapias scored in the 44th and 79th minutes and Juan Mahecha added a third in injury time.
