Portuguese champions Porto assumed a familiar position at the top of the Liga Sagres table after beating Gil Vicente 3-1 on Friday.

Despite losing head coach Andre Villas-Boas and striker Radamel Falcao to Chelsea and Atletico Madrid respectively, Porto have picked up where they left off in the treble-winning campaign of 2010/11, winning both of their first two matches of the new season.

Against the odds, it was the visitors who struck first in the match at Estadio do Dragao, with midfielder Joao Vilela scoring a penalty after just three minutes.

But the home side soon asserted their dominance, with Brazilian forward Hulk equalising in the 11th minute, also from the penalty spot.

Six minutes later and a goal from Romanian defender Cristian Sapunaru put Porto in front.

And five minutes into the second half, Hulk completed the turnaround with his second of the match and Porto’s third.

Two wins from two matches sees Porto go outright first, three points ahead of Academica and Vitoria Setubal, who play on Sunday and Monday respectively.

Gil Vicente meanwhile have just one point to show from their opening fixtures and lie 13th, just outside the relegation zone.
