Sporting Lisbon routed Gil Vicente 6-1 on Monday to move back into the top three in the Liga Sagres.
Starting the match six points adrift of joint leaders Porto and Benfica, Sporting took just seven minutes to take the lead in front of their home fans at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Daniel Carrico hit the target with a close range header to give Sporting the early advantage, but the visitors were able to restrict Domingos Paciencia’s side from inflicting any further damage before half time.
However, it did not take long for the floodgates to open after the interval, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel scoring a second for Sporting from the penalty spot on 58 minutes.
Spanish midfielder Diego Capel then scored a brace in five minutes as Sporting extended their dominance, before Roberto was able to stop the bleeding by pulling one back for Gil Vicente on 75 minutes.
But if the visitors thought Sporting would take their foot of the pedal in the closing stages they were wrong, as former Manchester City striker Valeri Bojinov netted a brace in the final 10 minutes to seal a 6-1 victory.
The win moves Sporting up to third on the table, three points behind Porto and Benfica who are both undefeated this campaign.
