Liga Sagres wrap: Naval keen on Europe, Porto coast

Nacional moved into the Liga Sagres’ European spots after a strong 2-1 win over struggling Naval de Maio on Sunday.

A goal from attacker Diego Barcelos and a Claudemir penalty inside 31 minutes set up the win for the visitors.

Striker Bolivia pulled a goal back three minutes from half-time for the hosts, but it was close as they got.

The loss leaves relegation-destined Naval five points from safety, while Nacional are now two points clear of sixth-placed Rio Ave in the battle for the last Europa League place.

Champions Porto continued on their winning way with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Vitoria Setubal.

Defender Valdomiro helped send Andre Villas-Boas’ team on their way with an own goal on 12 minutes, before strikes from Argentine Nicolas Otamendi, Brazilian Walter and Portugal winger Silvestre Varela secured an easy win.

Vitoria Setubal are five points clear of the relegation zone after the loss.

Sporting Braga missed their chance to regain third spot after being held to a scoreless draw against Uniao de Leiria.

Sporting Lisbon’s 2-1 win over Portimonense on Saturday saw them move into third. Uniao de Leiria remain 11th.

Olhanense grabbed a late equaliser to ensure safety with a 1-1 draw at home to Benfica.

Argentine forward Franco Jara had given the visitors a fourth-minute lead and it appeared as though they would hold on for the three points.

But veteran substitute striker Djalmir struck in the 94th minute to give his team the unlikeliest of points.

Benfica will finish the season in second as Olhanense ensured another season in the top flight with the point.

Maritimo secured a vital 1-0 win over Academica to ensure they can no longer be relegated.

A fourth-minute goal from Babacar Diawara separated the two teams before two sending offs in the second period.

Academica full-back David Addy was shown a straight red card in the 50th minute, before Maritimo defender Robson was given his marching orders in stoppage time.

Maritimo sit in ninth while Academica are not yet safe in 13th.

Beira-Mar played out a 1-1 draw at home to Rio Ave.

Yohan Tavares opened the scoring for the hosts after a quarter of an hour, before Tarantini equalised four minutes after the interval.

Rio Ave are fighting for a European spot and sit two points behind Nacional, while Beira-Mar are in 10th.
