A first-half double from veteran Jerome Leroy helped Evian to a 2-0 win at home over his former side Marseille on Tuesday.
Marseille were without Mathieu Valbuena and top scorer Loic Remy for the rescheduled match, which was postponed last month due to bad weather.
The visitors went close twice early on at the Parc des Sports, with first Benoit Cheyrou and then Jeremy Morel wasting good opportunities.
They would come to regret such profligacy, as Evian took the lead against the run of play.
Forward Yannick Sagbo put through Leroy, and the 37-year-old, who played for Marseille between 2000 and 2002, beat visiting goalkeeper Steve Mandanda to open the scoring in the 16th minute.
Leroy had a second six minutes later, netting from close range after Mandanda spilled his original effort.
The home side enjoyed chances to extend their lead, with Brice Dja Djedje threatening from long range just before half-time.
And Cedric Barbosa could have made it 3-0 on 75 minutes, but his pass failed to find Saber Khlifa when a shot on goal looked to be a better option.
Nevertheless, there was no way back for Didier Deschamps’ visitors, who have now lost three league matches in succession.
Defeat leaves Marseille eighth, eight points outside the Champions League qualification places.
Evian, promoted as Ligue 2 champions last season, are 10th on the table, seven points clear of the relegation places after winning their last three fixtures.
