Montpellier have increased Olivier Giroud’s release clause from $10 million to €16 million, L’Equipe has revealed.
The 25-year-old is enjoying a remarkable season at MHSC and is currently leading the Ligue 1 goalscoring charts with 16 goals in 22 games.
Having proven his goalscoring abilities at the big stage, Giroud is now a target for a host of English Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle.
The prolific goalscorer is widely tipped to leave Stade de la Mosson at the end of the season and L’Equipe claims that he will be available for €16 million.
The player, who has a contract until June 2014, had a $10 million release clause inserted in his contract, but the figure was due to rise based on the player’s performances.
After the striker scored 16 Ligue 1 goals and earned 2 France caps, the figure increased to €16 million.
That basically means that Giroud will be free to leave Stade de la Mosson if one of the interested clubs pay €16 million, which certainly looks like a realistic possibility.
