Lyon beat Toulouse to move within two points of Ligue 1 leaders Lille on Sunday, while Saint Etienne won away at Monaco.
Lisandro Lopez opened the scoring for Lyon five minutes in at the Stade Gerland, following up a Michel Bastos effort parried by Matthieu Valverde in the Toulouse goal.
The hosts were two up when Sweden international Kim Kallstrom rounded off a swift counter attack with a through-ball to Bafetimbi Gomis, who beat Valverde with a left-foot shot from inside the box on 35 minutes.
Lyon might have increased their lead in the second half, while Moussa Sissoko had chances to pull one back for the visitors, but Toulouse were unable to find a way past Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Loris.
The win means Claude Puel’s side are now closing in on Lille and just one point behind second-placed Paris Saint-Germain.
Saint Etienne climbed to seventh with a 2-0 win at Monaco.
Emmanuel Riviere set-up Laurent Batlles for the opener in the 20th minute at the Stade Louis II, and Bakary Sako wrapped up the three points with a goal from a free kick with 12 minutes remaining.
Monaco’s third defeat in five league matches leaves Guy Lacombe’s side level on points with third-bottom Caen and clear of the relegation zone on goal difference only.
