Paris Saint-German suffered a surprise loss while champions Lille were held to a draw on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season on Saturday.
A 28th-minute goal from midfielder Julien Quercia was enough to upset the big-spending PSG at the Parc des Princes.
PSG’s new signings Jeremy Menez, Kevin Gameiro and Salvatore Sirigu all made their debuts for the club, which unveiled Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore prior to kick-off.
Champions Lille made a slow straight to their title defence after playing out a 1-1 draw at Nancy.
Full-back Mathieu Debuchy put Lille ahead on 48 minutes, but a Franck Beria own goal denied them all three points at the Stade Marcel Picot.
Lyon recovered from an early deficit to record a 3-1 win over Nice to be the only one of last season’s top four to win on the opening day.
Anthony Mounier gave Nice a surprise sixth-minute lead before the seven-time French champions kicked into gear.
Argentine striker Lisandro Lopez and forward Bafetimbi Gomis had the visitors ahead prior to the interval and Maxime Gonalons sealed the points on 74 minutes.
Marseille needed a late goal from striker Loic Remy to score a draw 2-2 with Sochaux.
Midfielder Marvin Martin had cancelled out Lucho Gonzalez’s opener before Vincent Nogueira put Sochaux in front.
But Remy would ensure his side, which finished second last campaign, would take a point at home with his 74th-minute leveller.
In the Saturday’s other games, Montpellier got their season off to a good start with a 3-1 win over Auxerre.
Brest came from behind to draw 2-2 at home to Evian Thonon Gaillard, while Caen recorded a 1-0 win over Valenciennes.
Toulouse scored once in each half in their 2-0 win over newly promoted Ajaccio.
