The stand-off between Lionel Messi and Barcelona has been taking the central stage of the football world for a few weeks now. The club believe they are under no obligation to let the six-time Ballon d’Or winner leave unless his €700m release clause is met as his option to leave for free has expired, and they have the backing of the La Liga on that stance. Messi and his father Jorge, who is also his representative, claim the option should still be applied due to the 2019/20 season being extended.
