The Lisbon derby between Sporting Club de Portugal and Benfica ended in a disappointing goalless draw, which could well cost the latter their top spot in the Portuguese league.

Fans in the capital city flocked to Jose de Alvalade stadium to watch what they hoped would be an entertaining clash. With a total of 15 goals in the last three league games involving these two sides, a lot was expected from Saturday’s encounter.

But neither side managed to make a difference, as the two held each other to a fruitless scoreless draw.

Sporting remain stuck in seventh place as result of this score, and could finish the weekend in eighth if Uniao de Leiria beat Sporting Braga on Monday.

That very same match also determines Benfica’s spot at the end of this match-round. If Braga win, they would remain as only leaders with a two-points advantage over Benfica.
