Southampton and Liverpool lock horns at St Mary’s for the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup this weekend, and are within touching distance of making the semis. The Saints were building up a good run of form, but have since been knocked down a peg following consecutive defeats. Liverpool have been improving week after week under new manager Jurgen Klopp, and will fancy their chances of making the final four.

Southampton haven’t been the most formidable on home soil this season, dropping points in four of their seven Premier League games at St Mary’s. They did beat Aston Villa in their own backyard to make it this far, but have struggled to perform at home in all competitions, evident from their draw in the Europa League qualifiers. Ronald Koeman’s side have only picked up two wins at home since August, and are coming off the back of defeats to Stoke City and Manchester City.

As for the in-form Liverpool, Klopp’s side are enjoying a real turnaround in results. The Merseysiders have won three of their last four Premier League games, beating the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, while having picked up points to Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham and Southampton previously. Liverpool are unbeaten in the League Cup and Europa League this season, and have only lost once in the Premier League since September, so they are the team to beat.
