Lille had a magnificent season in Ligue 1 last campaign. After a tough year prior to it, Lille returned to the top echelon of the French championship. They finished the season in second place, securing their place in Champions League in 2019-20, which will see the team return to the best footballing competition.
However, that also meant several of their players had great seasons and will be targeted by ‘bigger fish’ during the summer transfer window. Nicolas Pepe was Lille’s best player, by far, and Bayern Munich were thought to be prime favourites at one point, before pulling out of the deal. Lille president Gerard Lopez now claims Liverpool could be in that race.
“I know there have been discussions with the player, not with us as a club. Liverpool have players in those positions and I read that maybe there were players who could leave, or not. I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents”, Lopez confirmed.
