Liverpool have opened talks with Schalke 04 over a potential transfer of Ozan Kabak in January, according to the Mirror.
The Turkish centre-back arrived to Gelsenkirchen last summer and has so far made 30 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring three goals. He is currently serving a five-game ban following an incident involving spitting at an opponent and a subsequent red card in the match against Werder Bremen in September.
Liverpool are left without the services of Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury suffered through a reckless tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford last week. On top of that, manager Jurgen Klopp has to deal with frequent absences of Joel Matip as well, and he has recently been utilizing midfielder Fabinho in the heart of defence next to Joe Gomez. The Merseysiders sold Dejan Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg early this summer and chose not to sign a replacement, but it seems the injury issues mentioned have changed the situation completely.
The Premier League champions are prepared to offer an initial fee of £20m for Kabak, and considerable add-ons on top.
