Liverpool are on the verge of securing a deal for Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos, the Express understands.
Reports in Greece are suggesting that the Reds have agreed on a fee with the Bundesliga club, with the move only being delayed by the defender’s recovery from a knee problem.
The 21 year old has been a long term target for manager Brendan Rodgers, with the player even making an appearance at the club’s penultimate match of last season against Fulham.
Papadopoulos has informed Liverpool that he is now fit to undergo a medical, meaning they could announce the transfer when they return from their pre-season trip to Thailand.
However, staff at Melwood are likely to hold a strenuous physical examination, as the Greek international managed just ten league appearances last season.
Papadopoulos’s expected arrival will be welcomed by the club, amid rumours that Martin Skrtel is set to follow Pepe Reina to Napoli, and continued speculation surrounding the future of Daniel Agger.
