Joel Matip runs out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and with Ibrahima Konate doing very well and 20-year-old Jarell Quansah appearing to be developing on the right lines, his future at the club has understandably come into doubt.
Matip had to leave the pitch in the 69th minute of Liverpool’s stunning triumph over Fulham last week, and manager Jurgen Klopp later confirmed that the 32-year-old centre-back had suffered a torn ACL and that he would not play this season again.
It would obviously be a very cruel way for the Cameroonian defender to end his Anfield days, which started seven and a half years ago when he joined from Schalke as a free agent. In that time, he made a total of 201 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 11 goals and helping the team win the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, and the Community Shield.
However, speaking during his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to face Crystal Palace on Saturday, Klopp has revealed that there is a chance for Matip to be offered a new deal between now and the end of the season.
