According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, AS Roma have contacted Liverpool on Monday to ask about the possibility of signing Xherdan Shaqiri on loan this month, and the Premier League leaders refused to discus any deal point blank.
The Swiss international arrived to Merseyside from Stoke City in the summer of 2018 for around £12.5 million. Though he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a regular member of the starting XI under Jurgen Klopp, his contribution has been of immense importance in some crucial games, especially last season when he scored twice in the 3-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United and when he assisted Georginio Wijnaldum to score his second, Liverpool’s third on that epic night that stunned Barcelona at Anfield. Overall, he has made 40 appearances for the Reds, scoring seven goals from his role as a decent backup option.
It is quite clear that despite being 14 points ahead of second-place Manchester City in the title race, Klopp doesn’t want to lose any of his squad depth for the second half of the season. Quite apart from that, Klopp recently said Shaqiri’s future is at Liverpool.
