Liverpool have rejected a transfer request from star striker Fernando Torres after already turning down an offer from Chelsea.
Liverpool management released a statement on Friday night confirming Torres would be forced to commit to his contract at Anfield, after the 26-year-old turned in a transfer request on the same day Kenny Dalglish’s side acquired Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez for 23 million pounds.
“Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool,” the statement on the club’s official website read.
“Fernando is under a long-term contract and the Club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti earlier in the day refused to confirm whether Torres’ intention to leave Anfield would squeeze a higher offer out of the Londoners, after the Blues attempted to lure the striker with an estimated 35-40 million pound offer.
“I don’t want to speak about this, you will have to ask the club. He is not my player and I have to have respect for Liverpool,” Ancelotti said.
“I’m not surprised, because I know very well what the club (Chelsea) is doing now. I am happy because the club is doing a fantastic job in this transfer market.”
