Liverpool handed boost as De Vrij announces Lazio exit

It was clear to most footballing fans that Premier League giants Liverpool had a defensive problem that needed sorting out. With that in mind it was little surprise to find them constantly linked with high-profile defenders in the run-up to and during the January transfer window.

In the end they opted for Virgil van Dijk, who seems to be fitting in well, but another of the names they were considering has now announced that he will be available at the end of his contract. Stefan de Vrij will leave Lazio when his current deal expires, according to the Liverpool Echo, and Merseyside could be an appealing destination.

The Dutch international is in his fourth season with the Serie A club, and has established himself as not only an important figure in the heart of their defence, but also a top quality player.
