Portuguese newspaper Record understands that Liverpool are ready to make an offer for Benfica forward Nicolas Gaitan.
The Argentine forward has been heavily linked with a summer switch to Manchester United, but the Red Devils have yet to make their interest concrete.
Meanwhile, their arch rivals Liverpool are attempting to hijack United’s bid for the highly rated attacker and Record claims the Reds are ready to offer around €18 million for the player.
Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira long ago confirmed that the Eagles would have to sell two star players this summer in order to balance the books and Gaitan is likely to be one of them.
The 24-year-old has a contract until June 2016 at Estadio da Luz and a €45 million release clause, but he could be available for lot less.
In spite of scoring just 4 goals in 44 competitive games for Benfica last term, Gaitan has enjoyed a very successful season on personal level.
