Liverpool are said to be keeping close tabs on Basel defender Manuel Akanji, reports from the Independent claim.
The 22-year-old Switzerland international is one of the hottest defensive prospects in his homeland.
Akanji is under contract with Basel until 2021 and several clubs – including Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund – have already taken notice of his emerging talent.
Basel centre-back has been one of the star performers in the Swiss championship this season whereas he also impressed in his side’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United last month.
Liverpool are said to regard him as one of the alternatives to Virgil van Dijk who Reds are expected to approach during January following a failed attempt to land the Southampton defender during summer.
Akanji would, however, be a cheaper alternative as Liverpool look to bolster their fragile backline.
