Liverpool have joined the race to sign Wigan Athletic striker Arouna Kone, according to the Sun.
The Ivory Coast international was tipped to follow manager Roberto Martinez to Everton, though the Toffee’s city rivals are planning to table a bid.
The Reds are preparing for a striker reshuffle this summer, with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez both likely to be moving away from Anfield.
Kone scored thirteen goals in an impressive debut season in English football that culminated in FA Cup glory, but is unlikely to remain with the Latics following their relegation to the Championship.
A number of clubs are considering whether to activate the £6.5million release clause in the 29 year olds contact, with the Merseyside duo currently at the front of the queue.
Liverpool are also close to securing a deal for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, and have been linked with a shock move for Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez.
