According to The Athletic, Liverpool have made an official offer of a new contract to captain Virgil van Dijk.
The deal the Merseysiders have put on the table for the Dutch defender to consider is believed to have fallen short of his expectations, in terms of both wages and contract length, and no agreement has been reached as of yet, but it certainly represents a long-anticipated step forward in the negotiations for the 33-year-old to remain at Anfield past next summer.
Van Dijk is one of the three Liverpool stars whose current contracts expire at the end of the season, along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Speaking after his team’s triumph over Manchester City several days ago, Salah said he had not yet received any proposal of a new contract, and that is still the case, though it is expected to change soon and it remains to be seen what happens from there.
Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold looks more likely to join Real Madrid as a free agent with each passing week.
