Speaking to BT Sports chief reporter Des Kelly following his team’s disappointing 1-1 draw away to Brighton and Hove Albion, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made his feelings about his team being forced to play in the 12:30 slot on Saturday after a Champions League game on Wednesday very clear.
Klopp has warned on several occasions that such intense game scheduling would result in numerous injuries, and Liverpool are indeed severely hit at the moment. Being already without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, and with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson freshly returned to the fold, they’ve now lost James Milner to a hamstring injury as well. What’s more, during the game, Brighton boss Graham Potter also made two forced substitutions with Neal Maupay replaced in the 26th minute and former Liverpool man Adam Lallana going off in the 71st after entering the fray off the bench in the 63rd. Obviously, Klopp made a very good point.
Kelly on the other hand, repeatedly instructed the Liverpool boss to address his own bosses and the rest of the Premier League for agreeing to the Saturday 12:30 slot in the first place, and avoided facing the fact that it’s the broadcasters who decide which game is fitted into which time slot.
