Liverpool are preparing a January move for Saint Etienne captain Blaise Matuidi, who could follow Damien Comolli to Anfield.
Comolli, who’s just been appointed director of football strategy at Anfield, rates Matuidi highly from his time at Saint Etienne and he could start the bidding war for the French midfielder, with Arsenal, Valencia and Juventus also keen.
Comolli arrived to Anfield after resigning from his post at Saint Etienne, where he fought hard to keep hold of Matuidi.
“He is our captain and a major player for us,” he said only last month. “He’s done well for us last season but we convinced him to stay.
“But I’m not being naive, I know it will be difficult to keep him and know he will end up in England or one of the top clubs in Europe. Whoever comes for him, it will cost them a lot of money.”
