The battle between Tom Hicks and George Gillet – Liverpool co-owners – has left Rafa Benitez short on spending money for this summer. So, Benitez will try to raise the funds to strengthen his squad by selling his fringe players.
Peter Crouch has been sold to Pompey for £11 million – money which could be put to use to solve the lengthy and boring Gareth Barry transfer saga – and now Liverpool want to replace the lanky forward. Rafa Benitez said that he wants to bring Robbie Keane to Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.
The Tottenham striker and vice-captain is considered to be a valuable Juande Ramos’ side, but The Times believes that, should Liverpool make an offer in the region of £20 million, they could land Keane. The problem for Liverpool is that they do not have the £20 million.
According to the same report in The Times, all of that could be solved. Liverpool have already agreed to sell midfielder Guthrie to Newcastle for £2.5 million and would fetch a further £4 million for England goalkeeper Scott Carson. However, much depends on the potential transfer of Xabi Alonso.
Italian giants Juventus are interested in the Spanish midfielder, but Liverpool’s asking price – £15 million – is too high for the Old Lady.
