Brendan Rodgers has been given the green light to make an offer for Xabi Alonso in January, the Metro understands.
The Spain international originally swapped Anfield for the Bernabeu back in 2009, having enjoyed a five year spell on Merseyside during which he won the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Whist in the Spanish capital, he has made almost two-hundred appearances and won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, though he is yet to feature this season.
He is currently side-lined with a knee injury, and will struggle to force his way back into Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI following the new look side’s positive start to the season.
Fellow midfielders Asier Illarramendi, Isco and Gareth Bale and Carlos Casimiro joined the club in the summer, while Luka Modric, Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira have all missed just one game between them in the league this season.
Chelsea and Juventus have also been linked with a move for Alonso, though with the 31 year old having such an affinity with Liverpool, it is they who appear to be the front-runners in the race to secure his services.
