According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have opened talks with star striker Luis Suarez’s agent over a new contract for the Uruguayan.

The Reds managing director Ian Ayre went to meet Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola, Pep’s brother, in Barcelona to open preliminary talks over a new deal.

Red hot

Since his return from suspension Luis Suarez has been in red hot form, particularly in the last few games, which has saw the striker score seven goals in just three games.

The Uruguayan now has 17 Premier League goals this season, despite missing the first five games of the league campaign.

Inspirational

Liverpool are second in the Premier League and are now being considered title contenders. Suarez has played a major part in the Reds challenge so far and has been a true inspiration for Brendan Rodgers side.

Without Suarez, it is very unlikely that Liverpool would still be in realistic contention at the top of the table, especially with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge missing through injury. The Reds are now just two points off league leaders Arsenal at the top of the table.

Moved up

Suarez seems to have moved up a level this season. Last season he was good, but he only scored 23 goals. The Uruguayan is only six behind his tally for last season and we are not even half way through the campaign.

If the striker continues in the same vein of form then he will well surpass his goal tally from last season. If Suarez was not considered amongst the best strikers in the world last season, he really should be now.

At times he has been simply unstoppable and looks likely to carry on that goal scoring form this weekend with relegation threatened Cardiff arriving at Anfield.

Smile

Luis Suarez now seems like he is enjoying his football and playing with a smile on his face. In past seasons he has looked like a man carrying the world on his shoulders. However, this season he is playing well and behaving himself into the bargain.

Admiration

I think even rival fans are starting to admit their begrudging respect for Suarez the footballer, even if Suarez the person has angered and annoyed them in the past, he has performed that well this season.

Everybody has been talking about his ability with a football, instead of his occasion silly behaviour, like in previous seasons. Here’s hoping that continues for the rest of the season.

Staying

It looks unlikely that Luis Suarez will sign a new contract until the summer. The Uruguayan is only likely to stay at Anfield if the Reds secure Champions League football for next season, which at the moment looks like a distinct possibility.

Suarez looked set to leave Liverpool this summer with Arsenal launching a failed bid, while Spanish giants Real Madrid seem to be constantly linked with the striker. However, he ended up staying at Anfield and has been superb this season.

Even if Liverpool does finish in the top four this season, Suarez could still move on with Real Madrid still believed to be interested in signing the striker. Liverpool are likely to double Suarez’s current weekly wage with his new deal, so money will not be an issue.

Signing a new contract in the summer will not necessarily mean that he is staying at Anfield. However, it is vital for the Reds that he does sign a new contract. If he does sign and decide to leave, then the Reds would be able to demand a bigger fee for the star.

Suarez is irreplaceable, but it would at least give Liverpool Brendan Rodgers a decent transfer kitty to rebuild the team for next season.

If Suarez signs a new deal and expresses his desire to stay then even better for the Reds. They would have one of the world’s best strikers to build their team around and a chance to really push on next season.

Favourite

The Liverpool striker is currently favourite to win the Premier League’s goal boot at odds of 2/7, with Manchester City’s injured star Sergio Aguero second favourite at odds of 9/2, while on-loan Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is odds of 20/1.

The Uruguayan looks like the favourite in a one horse race really, as Aguero looks set to be sidelined for up to two months and Lukaku is way behind the Uruguayan.

Enjoy

Liverpool captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard recently said that Reds fans should enjoy the performances of Suarez and he is right. The Uruguayan is breath-taking to watch at the moment, even for the neutral.

If Luis Suarez does decide to leave Liverpool in the summer, at least he will have left Liverpool fans with the memory of a fantastic season. If he decides to stay then the Reds will have an even better chance of claiming the Premier League title next season.

Is Luis Suarez now in the top bracket of players in world football?
