Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Leeds United defender Sam Byram, according to the Metro.

The Reds have been monitoring full-back’s progress for several months, and are now ready to make their move.

Sunderland and Southampton have also been linked with the England U20 international, though Brendan Rodgers is keen to usurp his rivals with an £8m bid.

Despite his young age, Byram has already racked up over a hundred league appearances for the Yorkshire club scoring seven goals, the last of which coming in last month’s 3-0 win over Fulham.

Liverpool lost to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon to leave themselves seven points off the Champions League qualification places.

However, they now turn their attention to their FA Cup quarter final replay with Blackburn Rovers, with Aston Villa awaiting the victors.

The Merseyside club can be backed at 13/20 to win at Ewood Park on Wednesday evening.
