I don’t know about you, dear reader, but when I look at Liverpool’s team, the glaring weakness I see is at the winger position. Mohamed Salah, who is the Premier League’s current top scorer with 12 goals, and Sadio Mane, who has registered four goals and three assists in his nine league appearances this season, are clearly not good enough.
Interestingly Jurgen Klopp agrees, and instead of investing in a boring central defender or left back, the German coach wants a flashy new toy up front. Gelson Martins, a 22-year old winger who currently plies his trade in the Portuguese league with Sporting Lisbon, is the name at the top of Klopp’s wish list, according to the Mirror.
Don’t get me wrong, Martins is a decent player. The winger has four goals and two assists in this Primeira Liga campaign, but those tallies don’t even match Mane’s output, let alone Salah’s, and some would argue that the Premier League is a tougher league to play in.
At £53m Martins is no bargain either, but if Liverpool want to stick to their tactic of out scoring all opposing teams then who am I to judge?
