Liverpool are preparing new contracts for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, according to Melissa Reddy of the Independent.
The January transfer window saw the Premier League’s runaway leaders sign Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg for around €8 million and nobody else. And while a number representatives of other clubs were involved in a desperate Deadline Day scramble on Friday, manager Jurgen Klopp, sporting director Michael Edwards and Fenway Sports Group (club owners) president Mike Gordon held a meeting over dinner to discuss their plans for the summer.
The general agreement was that the strategy that got the club where they are right now should not be abandoned. Big signings should only be made if they need to address a burning issue in the team, and at the moment, no such issue exists. The Champions League holders have been linked with the likes of Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain, Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, but a signing of that magnitude would only be considered if there was any danger of losing one of their front three. But it appears there’s no such danger either, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane all happy at Anfield.
Instead, Liverpool will focus on extending the contracts of Van Dijk and Alisson, which is something that both of them want done.
