Two sides who are battling it out at different ends of the First Division standings, a free-scoring Longford will welcome Athlone Town to the City Calling Stadium on Tuesday night.

Starting with the hosts, although a 2-0 defeat against Cabinteely may have had some panicking in Longford’s camp, Neale Fenn’s side have bounced back in some fashion. Picking up a dominant 5-1 win away at Athlone over the weekend in the dress rehearsal for Tuesday’s FAI Cup clash, they have now recorded back-to-back wins and their form in the final third will be starting to impress many around the City Calling Stadium. Climbing up to third in the First Division and still dreaming of make a late push for an automatic route back to the Premier Division, Longford have also now won each of their last six matches on home soil.

As for the visitors, while Longford might be enjoying a free-scoring run in the second half of the season, the same can not be said for an Athlone outfit low on both form and confidence. Including shipping five against Tuesday’s hosts over the weekend, Terry Butler’s side have now lost their last four matches on the bounce and have continued to struggle with some glaring defensive issues. With no side in Ireland’s second-tier holding a worse defensive record than the Town, Athlone have conceded eight goals in their last two appearances and it is also worth noting that they are yet to record a single clean sheet since the 15th of March.
