Julen Lopetegui has declined the offer to replace the sacked Bruno Lage as the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, according to multiple sources, apparently for ‘family reasons’.
The 56-year-old was sacked by Sevilla following a severe thrashing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund at home in the Champions League last week, as Raphael Guerreiro, Jude Bellingham, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt all struck to make the goal scored by Youssef En-Nesyri for the La Liga side practically pointless. Sevilla have appointed Jorge Sampaoli since, and they’ve already shown improvement by drawing 1-1 against the same opponent in Germany on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Wolves sought to take advantage of the situation and take lure Lopetegui to England and the Premier League club’s CEO Jeff Shi held talks with him, but the former Spain and Real Madrid boss obviously couldn’t be persuaded to make the move.
Wolves have now moved on to other targets, and in the meantime, Under-18 and Under-21 bosses Steve Davis and James Collins are taking charge of the team on a temporary basis.
Scheduled to take on Nottingham Forest at the Molineux on Saturday, Wolves are currently in the relegation zone with just six points from nine matches.
