Loris Karius joins Newcastle

Loris Karius has signed a short-term contract with Newcastle as a free agent, according to Fabrizio Romano. The official confirmation from the club is still to come, however, and it might be delayed a bit with the whole of UK currently mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Newcastle signed Nick Pope from Burnley this summer as their new No.1 and sent Martin Dubravka out on loan to Manchester United, relying on Karl Darlow to provide backup. Darlow has unfortunately suffered significant ligament damage in his ankle in training, leaving the team in need of another man to act as an understudy to Pope.

Once considered among the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, Karius left Mainz 05 to join Liverpool in 2018, and having competed against Simon Mignolet for a place between the posts for two years, the infamous Champions League final in Kyiv put an end to his spell with the Merseysiders, who moved quickly to sign Alisson Becker.

Since then, the 29-year-old has had nothing but problems as loans with Besiktas and Union Berlin failed to help get his career back on track. At the moment, Karius will consider himself lucky for a chance to join Newcastle, even if it means being nailed to the bench.
