Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is adamant that Dejan Lovren remains an important part of his squad.
The 31-year-old defender was tipped to leave the club this summer with his contract entering its final 12 months, and Zenit St Petersburg expressed their interest in securing his services. However, it has emerged that the club have the option to extend the deal until 2022, and it seems they’re about to do so – whether to keep the player for a while longer or simply to bump up his potential price, remains to be seen.
Be that as it may, Klopp says Lovren is still important at the club. Speaking to the press ahead of his team’s clash with Arsenal on Wednesday evening, the German pointed out that even though he usually puts two centre-backs into his line-up, four are always needed to carry the load throughout a long season. He says Lovren has put in some great performances in big matches, including the 2018 Champions League final.
