Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia has revealed that he was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in the summer.
The 28-year-old was a surprise starter for Argentina at the 2014 World Cup but having impressed at the tournament finals, he caught the eye of several top clubs.
According to the player himself, Spanish giants Real Madrid came calling, but the transfer failed to materialise.
“It’s true that in the summer there was contact with Real Madrid for me to go there, but as it was near the end of the transfer market the opportunity fell through,” Biglia told reporters while on international duty.
And while he is satisfied with life in Italy, the midfielder admits he hopes Real Madrid will rekindle their interest in his services.
“I’m fine with Lazio at the moment but I want to continue improving and I hope this option comes up again some other time.”
Lucas Biglia made a name for himself at Anderlecht, and he was constantly linked with a big club move during his stay in Belgium.
He eventually joined Lazio in a cut-price deal in the summer of 2013 and has since featured in 34 league matches for the Biancocelesti.
Biglia had a big role to play as Argentina reached the 2014 World Cup final, starting four games and making another two substitute appearances at the tournament finals.
