According to Marca, Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United during the summer transfer window. United, who were desperate to sign a defender as evidenced by the amount of targets they supposedly spoke with, were willing to double Lucas’ salary in addition to paying an €80 million fee for the Frenchman.
The 22 year old, who helped Les Bleus towards World Cup glory in Russia, thought about the offer over the course of a few days before eventually deciding that he wanted to remain with Atletico. The Spanish club have done well to keep the majority of their big names on the books as of late, although some of them appear to be happier about that than others.
United will likely head back into the market once January rolls around, in an attempt to bring in one or two more high quality defenders to Old Trafford.
