Ligue 1 side Marseille’s ambitions of reining in Champions Bordeaux next weekend have been dealt with a serious blow as coach Didier Deschamps ruled out star midfielder Lucho Gonzalez for week 4 clash at the Stade Velodrome.
A broken collarbone suffered in pre-season has meant the Argentine international, a €18m summer buy from Porto, has missed the first three games of the campaign.
And Deschamps believes the 28-year-old midfielder will again be forced to sit out Sunday night’s encounter, the first this season at the Stade Vélodrome.
“I don’t think Lucho will make it. His collarbone still hasn’t healed fully,” said Deschamps, whose side currently lie fourth, two points behind the league-leading Girondins.
However, the 1998 World Cup-winning captain does expect striker Bakari Koné, who sat out last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Rennes after suffering from dizziness, to be in contention.
“Baky wasn’t well enough to go to Rennes, but I think we’ll have him for the weekend. He should return to full training early this week.”, said Deschamps
