Portuguese daily journal Record understands that Benfica are interested in signing Zenit defender Luis Neto.

The two clubs are already in talks over a proposed move of Rodrigo Moreno and Ezequiel Garay to St Petersburg, and everything suggests Luis Neto will move in the opposite direction.

Benfica have long been hot on the trail of the 25-year-old centre-back and they finally have an excellent opportunity to conclude the deal.

The Portugal international is seen as a perfect replacement for star defender Ezequiel Garay, with the Eagles also set to turn a nice profit in the process.

Following a breakthrough season with Nacional, Luis Neto left Portugal to join Siena, but he did not stay in Italian Serie A as long as expected.

Some excellent showings in Italy’s top flight saw him catch the eye of Europe’s top clubs, with Zenit the quickest to react.

Neto has since made a total of 24 league appearances for the Russian giants and scored the only goal in a 3-1 triumph over Volga.
