Luiz ‘turned down’ Barca; Nani signs new five-year deal

Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed he rejected an 'official offer' from FC Barcelona in favour of staying at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed he rejected an ‘official offer’ from FC Barcelona in favour of staying at Stamford Bridge, Sky Sports understands.

Luiz, who joined Chelsea from S.L. Benfica for a fee believed to be in the region of €25 million in January 2011, has been linked with the Spanish champions on several occasions over the past two seasons, with many suggesting the Brazilian could be the long-term replacement for Carles Puyol.

The Brazil international, 26, made his season debut in the Blues’ defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup at the Stadion Eden in Prague on 30 August.

“There was an official offer [from Barcelona], but I decided to stay at Chelsea,” Luiz told Gazeta Esportiva.

“I am happy to play for a big club and be in the national team to represent my country.”

Since arriving in West London, Luiz has bagged 12 goals in 110 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and won three trophies: the FA Cup (2011/12), UEFA Champions League (2011/12) and UEFA Europa League (2012/13).

Nani signs new five-year deal

Manchester United winger Nani has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Old Trafford, according to the club’s official website, www.manutd.com.

Nani joined the Red Devils from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Sporting CP for a reported fee of €25.5 million in May 2007 and has won almost every title imaginable, including the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and Premier League, in his time at the club.

The Portugal international, 26, had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford earlier this summer amid reported interest from a number of top European clubs, including the likes of Arsenal, AS Monaco, Galatasaray S.K and Juventus.

United boss David Moyes is delighted to have secured Nani’s services until June 2008, with the 26-year-old becoming the club’s fourth summer signing behind new arrivals Guillermo Varela, Marouane Fellaini and Saidy Janko.

“I’m really pleased Nani has re-signed for the next five years,” said David Moyes.

“He has great ability and experience beyond his 26 years. I’ve been impressed with his approach to training and look forward to working with him in the coming seasons.”

Nani added: “Playing at United has been a fantastic experience for me.

“When I came to the Club, I never imagined the success we have enjoyed. Training every day with top players who want to win trophies every year is a great motivation to me.

“I’m very happy that the new manager has shown this faith in me and I’m looking forward to helping the team compete for more honours this season.”

The Portuguese has totaled 26 goals and 40 assists in 135 Premier League appearances for the 20-time English champions.
