According to reports from Sky Sports German international striker Lukas Podolski has agreed to join Premier League Arsenal for a fee in the region of £10.9million.
His club Cologne have refused to comment on the deal but according to reports coming out of Germany the deal is almost complete.
Linked
The 26 year-old attacker had been linked with a move to the Premier League on numerous occasions in recent seasons. Most recently though it’s been the Gunners that have emerged as favourites to sign the former-Bayern Munich star.
Experience
Despite his relative young age Lukas Podolski has amassed incredible experience at the top level of the game. The attacker has already won 95 caps for Germany and played at two World Cup final tournaments.
Podolski has also been playing in the Bundesliga since he was 18 years of age. Podolski certainly has the experience of a much older player.
Big
Podolski started his career at hometown club Cologne and impressed enough to earn a big money move to German goliaths Bayern Munich in 2006. Big things were expected of Podolski in Bavaria. Podolski and Bayern Munich were supposedly the ideal combination.
However, the move turned out to be far from ideal as he struggled to find his feet in Munich. The goals were in short supply. Podolski scored just 15 goals in 71 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern and in 2009 was sold back to his hometown club.
Scoring
His first season back Cologne was also a dry one for goals but the next season he regained his scoring touch finding the net 13 times in the Bundesliga. This season he has managed to find the net 16 times in just 20 appearances in the top flight.
His goalscoring record for his national team is also outstanding. The Polish-born striker has struck 43 times in 95 games for Germany, an impressive record for any forward at international level.
Versatile
Although often described as a striker, Lukas Podolski can also play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder. This versatility provides his teams with good attacking options. Arsenal are in need of more attacking options and I’m sure Podolski could be a player to provide those.
Quality
Arsenal have at times lacked strength in-depth this season in attack. Lukas Podolski is no doubt a talented player and he is the sort of quality player that would improve the Arsenal team. He may not be in the top category of players but he is the sort player that will add something to the Gunners attack.
The only worry would be that he fails to settle at his new club. The German international has already been in touch Arsenal defender and compatriot Per Mertesacker to see what it’s like living in London, so he is doing his research about the potential move.
Ideal
I think this move would be a good for everybody, apart from Cologne who will be losing a top player. Podolski has matured since his failed stint at Bayern and seems ready to step up to a bigger club than Cologne.
I’m sure he would be determined to be a success on the big stage after what happened at Bayern and I think he would be a success in the Premier League. He seems to have all the attributes that will equip him well in the English top flight.
I have a feeling that Arsenal will undergo a rebuilding of the squad this summer and Lukas Podolski wouldn’t be a bad first addition to the squad.
Although nothing has been confirmed by the clubs it seems that Lukas Podolski is heading for Arsenal and will more than likely be playing Premier League football next season.
Would Lukas Podolski be a good signing for Arsenal?
